Pentland Firth Renewables

Pentland Firth Renewables has been formed as a web portal for information on the proposed Pentland Firth area Marine Renewable projects.

The Crown Estate have announced that 11 schemes capable of generating up to 1.6 gigawatts (GW) of electricity will be built on the Pentland Firth and around the Orkney Islands, off the northern coast of the Scottish mainland.

Five sites have been allocated for tidal energy developments potentially generating 1000 megawatts (MW) of power and six for wave projects, also generating 600 MW.

Three major power firms, E.ON, Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) Renewables and Scottish Power Renewables, along with MeyGen Ltd will spearhead the larger of the 11 schemes. Two of the Marine Energy developers, Pelamis and Marine Current Turbines will have smaller schemes of their own.
